Getting here and around

Ekerö has one road, a commuter boat, two road ferries and a cluster of bus routes from Brommaplan. Each connection below links to the operator's own timetable, and that is where the times should be read.

Bus

All bus services on the Mälaren islands are run by SL. The hub on the mainland side is Brommaplan, where the green metro line meets the buses; on the islands, Ekerö centre at Tappström is the interchange between buses and the commuter boat. The Drottningholm stop is served by the Brommaplan routes in the 300 series. Plan journeys and see timetables at sl.se. The routes below are taken from SL's timetables valid from 17 August to 12 December 2026.

Road ferries

Two road ferries link the islands with the outside world, both run by the Swedish Transport Administration's ferry service. Traffic information and timetables are in the Trafikinfo Färjerederiet app and at trafikverket.se.

Boat

Lake Mälaren is still a route to travel by. SL's commuter boat runs all year, Strömma's excursion boats to Drottningholm and Birka run from May to October. Kungshatt, Björkö and the smaller islands are otherwise reached only by your own boat or a water taxi.

Car

Ekerövägen, county road 261, is the only road: from Brommaplan over the Nockeby bridge, the Drottningholm bridge, through the Lindö tunnel and over the Tappström bridge to Ekerö centre. From the south you take the Ekeröleden ferry from Slagsta. Distances from Ekerö centre: Brommaplan about 11 km, Stockholm Central about 19 km, Arlanda about 52 km and Södertälje about 23 km via the ferry.

Bike

There is a cycle path all the way from Stockholm city centre to Drottningholm and on along Ekerövägen. During the roadworks the footpath and cycle path have changed sides on the Nockeby bridge; on the Drottningholm bridge it is on the southern side.

Taxi

Local firms based on the islands are Taxi Ekerö, Wanda Taxi and Stenhamra Taxi. The Stockholm firms also drive out to Ekerö.

The Stockholm bypass and Ekerövägen

Ekerö has a single road to the mainland, Ekerövägen, which is why the E4 Stockholm bypass (Förbifart Stockholm) matters more here than in most municipalities. The bypass runs in tunnels under Lovön, and when the whole road opens in 2030 Ekerö gets two new links to the mainland via the Tillflykten and Edeby junctions on Lovön: south towards Kungens kurva and north towards Hjulsta, without passing Brommaplan.

Good to know

The links and route details were checked on 19 October 2026. Times are not given here; they change at every timetable shift and belong with the operators. If something has changed, let us know and we will correct it.
